iPhones NewsThe Maryland men's basketball team formally announced its four-day foreign tour to the Bahamas, including three games against local teams.
The Terrapins open play on Tuesday, Aug. 6 against the Bahamas All-Stars at 7 p.m., face the Commonwealth Giants on Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. and wrap everything up against the Grand Bahamas All-Stars on Aug. 9 at 11 a.m. All games will be played at Kendal G. L. Isaacs National Gymnasium in Nassau.
"We are excited about this great opportunity for our young team to have this invaluable experience in playing in the Bahamas," Coach Mark Turgeon said in a news release. "This is a terrific experience to learn about another culture, and to doing it together as a team over the summer helps with our overall chemistry as we begin to prepare for the upcoming season."
Teams can embark on foreign tours once every four years, and are allowed additional summer practices to prepare. Maryland scheduled 14 practices beginning in July.
"I like the intensity and focus we've had over the summer," Turgeon said in the release. "We have done some great work on the court over the last month and I am really looking forward to seeing how we respond in the Bahamas. We will play three talented teams and it will give us a good indication about the type of progress we have made."
The release named Seth Allen, Nick Faust and Dez Wells as the team's three returning starters. Evan Smotrycz, in his first year of eligibility since transferring from Michigan, figures to fill the stretch-four starting spot. Bahamian native Shaquille Cleare, whose home island is a puddle-hopper away from Atlantis Resorts, where the team will stay, will probably start at center.
Maryland opens its 2013-14 regular season on Nov. 8 against Connecticut at Brooklyn's Barclays Center at 6:30 p.m.
