iPhones NewsA series of okay finishes followed, but last season everything came together. Mr Iball found himself in the top 100 fantasy football players by late October, the top 20 by February and then in first position with a few matches to go.
He clung on, beating exactly 190,148 players to take the title.
How did he do it? Partly by spending around an hour and a half researching each week. But more specifically, here are his ten secret tactics for wining fantasy football.
1) Ditch your sentimentality Wayne's a die-hard Man United fan but he doesn't let that interfere with selection. "It's quite important not to let your club supporting loyalties influence your decision making," he says. Only Robin van Persie made his team last year. Often bigger clubs use squad rotation too - not good from a points perspective.
2) Research the schedules Studying fixtures is bread and butter for any seasoned fantasy footballer. Well-timed transfers to take advantage of schedule quirks is crucial to success, Wayne says. For example thanks to their Super Cup match Chelsea will actually playing twice in this season's first week, offering a potential early points boost
3) Monitor the football media Injuries, fall-outs, changes in tactics - these can all influence selection, meaning it's vital to monitor football news. "If you can pick up information from the media that one manager will play a stronger team in the FA Cup, you can use that in fantasy football to your advantage," Wayne says.
4) Bag the big point scorers To win you've got to have four or five of the season's biggest six or seven point scorers, according to Wayne. Working out who they are early is key. Wayne snapped up Arsenal's new signing Santi Cazorla in week two when he saw the lad had talent. This year both Bale and Van Persie are in his team.
5) Avoid Joey Bartons at all costs You'd be foolish to pick a hot-head according to Wayne. "You don't want a player in your team who might bank a few points one week and then pick up a ban the next," he says. Temperamental geniuses should be approached with caution. Marouane Fellaini falls into this bracket, Wayne says, and maybe even Suarez too.
6) Know your transfer deadlines One of the most common mistakes in fantasy football is missing the transfer cut-offs for that week, Wayne says. Player trading must be completed before the first match of the weekend starts, which is often an early kick off. Make sure you get all your transfers done before then.
7) Save some transfers Wayne tends to save as many as five of his 30 transfers until the final few matches, bringing flexibility in the run in. He reckons his rivals failed to do this and got stung by late unexpected twists like when Suarez bit Branislav Ivanovic and was handed a lengthy ban.
8) Beware suspensions Failing to realise when one of your players is a yellow card away from suspension is common error, Wayne says. You should always know who is facing a one or two match ban and switch them out if it's likely to cost you.
9) Understand your enemy If you're in the top 20 come April it's time to get serious. Last year Wayne studied the weekly points increase of his nearest rival to work out which players he had. "I was reasonably confident that I was able to actually identify the team of the chap who came second," he says. Modify transfers accordingly.
10) Trust your instincts Don't be afraid to make drastic changes. Five minutes before one transfer deadline Wayne swapped his entire defence and keeper from Liverpool players to Everton players, trusting David Moyes would pick a stronger team in the FA Cup. He credits the move with turning round his season.
